Locals angered by 'shocking' dumping

A scenic route set to be upgraded to a Greenway was the latest target for fly tippers last week. The old Railway line, adjacent to Loreto Road in Cavan Town, was blighted in a “shocking” incident of illegal dumping.

The discarded rubbish included an old suite of furniture and a black bag filled with household refuse.
Local residents are outraged at the latest incident on what is a popular route with walkers and believe a pick-up truck or large van was used to dump the waste.
The path is scheduled to be incorporated later this year as part of a new Urban Greenway, linking in with the existing walking/cycling trail around nearby Cavan General Hospital.
The secretary of the Carrickane and District Residents Association, Liam de Paor, described the dumping as “shocking”.
“This route is popular with local families who enjoy walking in fresh air and viewing the beautiful trees, seeing lots of wild life and enjoying the bird’s song – the last thing they want to see is rubbish,” he told The Anglo-Celt.
The local litter warden has been informed of the incident and is investigating.
The chairman of the local residents association, Sean Curtin, also expressed his anger at the act. “This is wanton destruction and it does not cost that much to take this to the landfill site. We are endeavouring to enhance the area and planted flowers with assistance from Cavan County Council. We do rubbish collections and litter picking along the Loreto Road a couple of times a year.”
He added that passing motorists also fling waste from their cars into the Loreto Woods.
Patricia Masterson from the Tidy Towns Committee is equally disappointed at the latest incident. “There was a big Spring Clean a couple of Saturdays ago – there was an opportunity to have this kind of rubbish collected from all the estates. Tidy Towns made a big effort to include everyone in that clean-up. The also cleaned up the river in the Con Smith Park.”

Appeal

The local Carrickane and District Residents Association is appealing to the Cavan County Council to fit a security camera and light, activated by a motion sensor, beside the entrance to the waste water treatment facilities.
They maintain that this camera could monitor traffic at night and get the registration of any vehicles arriving to dump rubbish.
