The late Johnny McCormack

Cavan mourns passing of 'inspirational' athlete

The Cavan athletics community is collectively mourning the loss of Cavan Town man Johnny McCormack.
Cavan Triathlon Club posted to their Facebook page about the passing of the popular athlete. In the post they said: “It’s with great sadness and a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our great friend and truly inspirational man Johnny McCormack who has passed away.
“The triathlon world and Cavan Triathlon Club was blessed with his presence. He inspired many and showed age was no object to entering the sport. He helped so many others throughout his time within the triathlon sport.”
Meanwhile, Peter Walsh of Killygarry Running Club, of which the late Mr McCormack, from Highfield Road, was also a popular member, said: “There are so many stories I could tell about the great man, how much he inspired and helped others in all aspects of his life. If I could I use one word to describe Johnny it would be ‘legend’.
“He was one of life’s true gentleman. You will be missed by all my good friend, life is so cruel at times.”
The clubs formed guards of honour at Mr McCormack’s funeral, which was one of the largest seen in the region in recent years.
Johnny McCormack is survived by wife Angela, son Shane, daughters Aisling and Niamh, parents Teddy and Pauline, grandson Dylan, brothers Brian and Eddie, sisters Trisha, Sandra and Andrea.
