Warning of freezing temperatures overnight

National weather service Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow weather alert, warning of freezing temperatures overnight in many parts across the country including counties Cavan and Monaghan.

The ‘Low Temperature/Ice’ warning has been issued in respect of counties Munster, Connacht, Leinster, as well as Cavan and Monaghan.

It will remain valid from 9pm later this evening, Saturday, January 18, and will remain in place until late morning at least, at 11am on Sunday, January 19.

Met Eireann predicts that temperatures will fall to at least minus 3 or minus 4 degrees tonight, with the coldest times expected to be at around dawn, with conditions staying below freezing until mid-morning on Sunday.

“This evening, frost will develop quickly after dark. Tonight will be dry with clear skies and a widespread sharp or severe frost with some icy patches. Some patches of mist and fog will develop also. Lowest temperatures of zero to minus 4 degrees.”

The weather office adds that tomorrow morning, Sunday, that frost and any mist or fog will be slow to clear. “The day will be dry and bright with good sunny spells in most areas. Not quite as cold as today with highest temperatures ranging from 4 degrees in Ulster to 8 degrees in Munster. Mostly light southerly breezes, but becoming fresher near west and northwest coasts.”

The weather warning follows chilly conditions across the region over the past week, which led to black ice being reported by motorists in some areas of the county.
