'Status Yellow' snow warning issued

 

A 'Status Yellow' snow and ice warning has been issued for counties Cavan and Monaghan later tonight.

Areas also included in the warning is the province of Connacht, Donegal, Dublin, Louth and Wicklow.

“Icy in parts tonight with wintry outbreaks. Some snow accumulations possible before morning, mainly across the north and on higher ground elsewhere,” Met Eireann have said.

The alert comes into effect from 8pm tonight, February 12, and will remain in place until 10am on Thursday, February 13.

The national weather service predict that a band of rain extend countrywide this evening and early tonight will turning wintry across Connacht and Ulster, “falling as snow over high ground with sleet at lower levels.”

They add that it will remain wintry across Ulster until morning with further wintry falls expected for a time. “Frost and ice in parts too. Lowest temperatures of -1 to + 4 degrees, coldest across the north and northwest. Winds will ease overnight, still strong though near some coasts.”

Highest temperatures will range from a rather chilly 4 to 6 degrees, leading to frost after dark, especially across Ulster with minimums early in the night of zero to minus 3 degrees.

The outlook towards the weekend, Met Eireann forecasters say a clearance from the west to sunny spells and scattered showers during the late morning and early afternoon, turning to Saturday when it will be “very wet and very windy” in association with Storm Dennis.

“Rain in all areas during the morning, heaviest in the west, clearing to blustery showers during the afternoon. Strong and gusty southerly winds veering southwesterly with gales on coasts. Another band of heavy rain crosses the country on Saturday night with southwesterly winds remaining strong to gale force. Lows of 2 to 5 degrees.
Similar blustery conditions can be expected on Sunday as well.
