Cavan Syndicate to collect Lotto cheque Friday

The record breaking Cavan syndicate of 295 Members will be presented with their €256,142 EuroMillions Prize on later this week.

This Friday (February 21), a delegation from the National Lottery will travel to the rural area of Drumgoon outside Cootehill Cavan to pay-out the prize to the community based syndicate after they won the Match 5 + Lucky star prize in the Tuesday, January 21 draw.
The 295 person EuroMillions syndicate has been described as a “unique fundraising project” which was launched to provide a community childcare facility in Gallonray House.

As part of the initiative, the individuals and households involved in the syndicate each contributed €100 towards the programme, with a portion of all contributions used to purchase a EuroMillions ticket.

All members of the syndicate received a certificate of their membership; and the numbers being played in each of the draws. With 295 members in the syndicate, that breaks down to €868.29 each!
The lucky Drumgoon community group will now become the biggest ever syndicate to win a top tier prize in a National Lottery game. Previously, the biggest ever winning lottery syndicate in Ireland was a 291 person syndicate from Confey GAA Club in Leixlip, Co. Kildare who won a €200,000 Lotto prize in 2004.

The presentation will take place at Gallonray House, Maudabawn.

Speaking to The Anglo-Celt at the time, Chairman of the Drumgoon Community Centre Co-op Aidan McCabe explained: “It was a fundraiser for our after-school extension to provide an extra room as the numbers using our facility have doubled in recent years.”

Its estimated that the families involved in the local syndicate had a 2,000-1 chance of hitting the jackpot.
“It's a mighty boost in a farming community,” added Aidan.
“We are delighted. There are the people who support several projects in Gallonray over the past 40 years and it's great to see them get a bit of a reward,” he said.
