Counties braced for heavy rainfall
A Weather Advisory notice has been issued by national weather service Met Eireann, warning for Cavan and 14 other counties to brace for three days of heavy rainfall which could lead to some localised flooding.
The warning from Met Eireann comes into effect from 12 noon today, March 7, and will remain in place until 6pm on Tuesday, March 10, and could see accumulations of up to 50mm of rainfall in places.
The notice issued covers Cavan along with the province of Connacht, neighbouring Longford and Westmeath, Offaly, Donegal, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary.
“Periods of heavy rainfall from Saturday to Tuesday may lead to some local flooding as river levels remain elevated.
The heaviest of the rain will be through Saturday afternoon, and again early Monday and early Tuesday, with rainfall accumulations from Saturday to Tuesday of 40 to 50mm in places, with some spot flooding.”
There is the prospect of strong winds at times also, with gales on coasts.
Colder temperatures can be expected too, dropping to as low as 2 and 4 degrees at night time.
“Showers will become increasingly confined to the west and north for a time on Sunday night as west to southwest winds moderate, but cloud will increase and rain will push into Atlantic coastal counties overnight. Winds will back southerly and strengthen too, with gales developing on west and southwest coasts by morning. Lows of 2 to 4 degrees, coldest in Ulster,” the forecaster says.
