Upgrade to 'dosing' system at B'boro plant planned

Irish Water has committed to upgrading an essential part of the treatment plant in Bailieborough which its hoped would avoid any repeat of an issue which saw a 'Do Not Consume' restriction slapped on almost 8,000 customers in the run up to last Christmas.

The warning was implemented after the HSE, Irish Water and Cavan County Council found unsafe elevated levels of the otherwise naturally occurring mineral manganese in the drinking water source at Skeagh Lake.

Along with Bailieborough, the areas of Mullagh, Virginia and Killinkere were also affected by the drinking water ban.

The notice was in place for almost two weeks prior to being lifted.

However, it now appears as if a solution is in sight, with Aontú's Sarah O'Reilly telling the monthly meeting of Cavan County Council (March 9) that representatives attached to the semi-State utility were going to upgrade the “dosing” system at the Bailieborough plant.

She and several other Councillors, including Kingscourt's Clifford Kelly attended the regularly held closed-doors “clinic” with Irish Water officials.
