More Covid-19 restrictions expected

Further restrictions are to be implemented, with the full-scale closure of service sectors regarded as non-essential, from tomorrow.

Restrictions will also be introduced on outside gatherings.

While measures are being ramped up yet another notch, they are not expected to go so far as replicate the lock down announced in the UK yesterday.

Meanwhile, priority testing for health staff including GPs is to be introduced under the new measures, with increased general testing for those displaying symptoms connected to the Covid-19 virus.

The Government Cabinet met this morning to consider a fresh of recommendations from the National Public Health Emergency Team.

Current measures in place including the closure of schools, crèches, universities and pubs. While these measures are due to expire at the end of this week, March 29, all are expected to be extended.

There are 1,125 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Ireland, with six deaths.

Around 80% of cases of Covid-19 will be a mild to moderate illness, close to 14% have severe disease and around 6% are critical.
