Invasion of the Nudists- April Fools!

Invasion of the nudists- a reminder of an ‘April Fools’ story published in The Anglo-Celt newspaper back in 2009.

Back in 2009 The Anglo-Celt published a story in the early pages of the newspaper.

Written by Celt journalist Sean McMahon, the headline was ‘English naturist colony to holiday in Cavan’, and reported that Cavan was the ideal getaway location for the free-living group, and included an exclusive interview with their leader, Willie Long.

The story read: ‘A naturist colony from the English midlands have chosen Cavan and the ideal location for a getaway from it all and The Anglo-Celt had learned that the party of 24 will descend on a secluded lakeside location early next week.

‘The group comprising of twelve women and twelve men from the rather reclusive group are really looking forward to letting it all hang out in Cavan.

'A spokesman for the naturists, Willie Long, told The Anglo-Celt that as a result of an exhaustive research, they have ascertained that the people of Cavan are much less likely to cause them hassle, as they go bird watching in the nude.

‘Some members have purchased new fishing rods especially for the trip because they are keenly aware of the 365 lakes in Cavan, so they could be casting out in your neck of the woods.

‘When asked if they would mind this newspaper naming the exact location where they will be based, Willie said: “Were would prefer not to stick our necks out at this stage. We do not want peeping Tom’s from outside County Cavan coming along to see us enjoying ourselves as nature intended.”

'One of the twelve women, Barbara Nipton then came on the phone to tell The Anglo-Celt: “One of my best friends hails from Cavan and she lives in Coventry. She told me last week that we will get a very warm welcome in Cavan and Cavan is not virgin territory for nudity.”

'A senior Garda spokesman told The Anglo-Celt this week that they will not be taking any firm stand against the members of the nudist colony who were quite entitled to come here and enjoy a carefree holiday, so long as they do not offend modesty in a provocative manner.”'

Public reaction

'When The Anglo-Celt asked 20 members of the public on the streets of Cavan if they will take offence to the presence of a colony of nudists on holidays in Cavan, they all said: “Sure the way things are going with the hair shirt budget on the horizon next week, we may have to join them ourselves because we won’t be able to afford any clothes.”'
