New facilities for Emergency Department at Cavan General

Additional facilities are set to be provided at the Emergency Department at Cavan General Hospital.

Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith has received confirmation from the HSE of the investment.

Deputy Smith has highlighted the need for an upgrade of facilities in the Dáil.

A project to extend the ED Department will include a second Resuscitation Room, additional clinical administration area and additional waiting area, as approved by the HSE’s National Capital Steering Committee. A design team has now been selected to progress this project and initial designs are due for review in the third quarter of this year.

The HSE in its reply to Deputy Smith stated: “The process of engaging a design team to progress this project was being initiated prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The COVID-19 Pandemic has placed additional stresses on all areas of acute hospitals, including EDs and a design team has now been selected to progress this ED project whilst taking account the learnings presented by the COVID-19 Pandemic."

Welcoming the news, Deputy Smith said: “For some time I have been highlighting to successive Health Ministers and the HSE the need to upgrade and provide additional accommodation at this Emergency Department due to increased attendance of patients over the years with the resultant pressures on staff and inadequate facilities for patients.”
