Seventy-seven abortions carried out for Cavan women last year; 36 for Monaghan

Abortion figures revealed county by county for 2019

Seventy-seven abortions were performed on women who gave Cavan as they county of residence last year; while 36 terminations were carried out for women with a Monaghan address, the second lowest number nationally. In total, 6666 terminations were carried in the state in 2019.

The figures are published in the first Annual Report on the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018 published earlier this week.

The study covers the period from January 1, 2019, until December 31, 2019, and has now been laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas.

It is the first annual report to be published since the grounds on which termination of pregnancy is lawfully permitted were expanded in Ireland, following the result of the May 2018 referendum on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution.

The largest number of abortions were carried out in Dublin (2493), according to the woman's address; followed by Cork (606) and Kildare (295), while the lowest number was carried out in Leitrim (27).

Looking to other neighbouring counties, Longford recorded 47 terminations; Meath 252; Westmeath 104 and Roscommon 43.

The report showed that over 98 percent (6542) of the abortions took place within the first six weeks of pregnancy, 100 were carried out because there was what the report describes as a “condition likely to lead to death of foetus”.

A total of 21 were carried out due to a risk to life or health of the mother and three were performed due to the risk to life or health in an emergency.

The Pro Life Campaign said that when the figure of 6,666 abortions is added to the 375 abortions carried out on women from Ireland who travelled to England during the same period, the figure amounts to 7,041 in total.
