Redemption of a Rogue to premiere this Saturday

This Saturday the world premiere of Philip Doherty's Redemption of a Rogue takes place, but instead of being treated to red carpets and champaign receptions, the audience for the Cavan director's cinematic debut will be in living rooms around the world.

The Galway Film Fleadh, now in its 32nd year, is taking place entirely online. It started on Tuesday, July 7 and runs to this Sunday, July 12.

Following the closure of cinemas during the COVID-19 pandemic, the busy festival, long the prime spot for launching new Irish features, has moved online for this year. The festival will present 11 world premieres, two European premieres and 10 Irish premieres for views to enjoy from the comfort of their own homes.

The Irish world premieres include Doherty’s 'Redemption of a Rogue', Phil Sheerin’s 'The Winter Lake', Eoin Macken’s 'Here are the Young Men', and Dave Minogue’s 'Poster Boys'.

Doherty's work tells the story of Jimmy, a nihilist carrying around a black leather doctor’s bag containing the rope he plans to hang himself with. Filled with guilt and shame, he returns to his hometown in the cold austere beauty of west Cavan.

It's available on the Fleadh website this Saturday from 9pm. The screening is followed by a question and answer session with director Philip Doherty, producers Emma Foley and Tamryn Reinecke and cast Aaron Monaghan, Aisling O'Mara and Kieran Roche.

'Drifting'

Meanwhile ‘Drifting’, a short film penned and directed by Granard duo Robert Higgins and Patrick McGivney, and starring Normal People’s Paul Mescal, will also have its premiere at the Galway Fleadh.

CMG Body: “This film has been a real passion project for us from the beginning and the whole community of Granard rowed in behind us to help make it a reality,” said Patrick.
