Programme for Government must be delivered on – Smith

Swift delivery of the Programme for Government has to be the priority of government, Deputy Brendan Smith said as the new government completes their first full week in office.

“Our country faces many serious challenges and we need to build a country that serves all of its people,” the Cavan-Monaghan TD told the Celt.

Addressing the fall-out of the global pandemic is high on the veteran Fianna Fáil TD's radar.

“There needs to be a continuous and relentless fight against Covid-19 and unfortunately this pandemic still poses serious problems for all of our country. Sadly so many people have lost their lives and many many families have suffered so much with grief and illness.

“Through a united effort progress has been made and we still need to work together and strictly follow public health guidelines. By following public health guidelines we are supporting those heroic frontline workers,” he said.

Stimulus

He continued by saying supporting businesses and employees, particularly rural enterprise and the agriculture and tourism/hospitality sectors should be addressed in the Government’s July stimulus package.

“We need real progress on health, housing, childcare, education, on tackling crime and drugs, on essential upgrade of broadband and investment in our roads network.”
