Council cleans up chicken manure spillage

Emergency services are clearing a large spillage of chicken manure, which is understood to have fell from the back of a trailer passing through Ballyconnell.

The incident occurred around lunchtime, and members of the local fire service, An Garda Síochána and the council's environmental section are on the scene “monitoring the situation”.

Motorists in the area are being urged to avoid the stretch of road connecting from the N87 roundabout at Boxmore to the crossroads in the centre of town connecting to the R205 Ballinamore Road.

A spokesperson for Cavan County Council confirmed their involvement in clearing the near 850 metre spillage on the roadway from the Annagh business park via Daisy Hill.

“A large quantity of agricultural by-product has been spilled on the N87 outside Ballyconnell, stretching from the roundabout outside Ballyconnell into the town, and out on the R205 towards Ballinamore, creating treacherous driving conditions. Local Municipal District crews are working to clean the road surface, assisted by Cavan County Fire Service.”

The spokesperson added: “The Council's environment section is monitoring the situation. Drivers should avoid the area for the present.”
