Yellow Status rainfall warning issued

A Yellow Status rainfall warning for Munster and parts of Leinster has been issued by Met Éireann that will stay in place until Friday.

The metrological service warns that intense and potentially thundery downpours are expected that may lead to localised flooding.

Storm Ellen and Storm Francis resulted in heavy rainfall in the past week, this may further increase river levels and result in river flooding also.

Today will be generally cloudy today with showers or longer spells of rain, heavy at times. Some thundery downpours are possible, mainly across the midlands, south and east, bringing a risk of localised flooding. Bright or short sunny intervals too, with the best of these likely over the southern half of the country. Top temperatures of 14 to 19 degrees, warmest in the south. Light to moderate easterly or variable breezes.

Further showers or longer spells of rain tonight with a continued risk of localised flooding, particularly in the east. Moderate to fresh and gusty northerly winds will develop overnight, increasing strong to near gale along Atlantic coasts. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees.

Friday will be a cool, breezy and showery day. Rather cloudy to begin with scattered showers, some heavy, but it will tend to brighten up from the west later in the day with sunny spells developing. Highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees in fresh and gusty northerly winds, strong to near gale at the coasts.

Met Éireann also say that weather conditions will be favourable to the spread of Potato Blight. This will continue across much of Ireland for much of the coming week.
