Members of Cavan General Hospital’s Nursing and Midwifery department have been honoured by the DAISY Foundation for their care, compassion and courage through the Covid-19 pandemic.

The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, by members of his family.

Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Nurses may be nominated by patients, families and colleagues.

The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s mission to recognise the extraordinary, compassionate nursing care they provide patients and families every day. Lynda McGrory, director of nursing, Cavan Monaghan Hospitals, accepted the Daisy Foundation honour on behalf of the local nursing and midwifery staff. In a post on social media, she stated: ‘It was a honour accepting this award from the faculty.’
