Castleblayney burglary suspects to appear before Virginia District Court

Gardaí have arrested and charged two men having responded to a burglary in progress at a property in Castleblayney town overnight.

Gardaí on patrol in the town were approached by a member of the public who had observed a break-in at a property on the Main Street shortly before 11pm yesterday (Thursday September 17, 2020).

Gardaí responded immediately and on arrival at the scene observed the property was open. Upon entry they met two men on the stairs of the building.

Both men, one in his early 40s and another in his mid 20s, were arrested.

One of the men was found in possession of a hammer, which was concealed in his trousers.

Both men were detained at Castleblayney Garda Station and have since been charged in connection with this burglary.

They will appear before Virginia District Court sitting in Cavan this morning (Friday, September 18, 2020) at 10.30am.

Speaking following the arrests, Inspector Michael O’Donoghue of the Cavan Monaghan Garda District said, "I would like to thank the public for alerting us to this incident. Their assistance enabled the Gardaí to respond quickly, as the burglary was in progress.

"I would encourage everybody to call us immediately if they notice anything suspicious, and not to hesitate in doing so. Having members of the community contact us when they notice something is invaluable”.
