Water quality meeting goes online

A community information meeting to discuss water quality in the Templeport Lake Stream and Bunerky Lough will be held online next Tuesday. Members of the community in west Cavan are invited to attend the online meeting arranged to discuss water-related issues in the area.

The Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) is hosting the virtual community information meeting on Tuesday, November 3, at 7:30pm, via Zoom.

LAWPRO is a shared service working with Local Authorities and State agencies to meet obligations under the EU Water Framework Directive for the development and implementation of River Basin Management Plans in Ireland.

The Zoom meeting will discuss the future of Bunerky Lough, a well-known lake for fishing found to the south-west of Bawnboy and Templeport Lake Stream. Templeport Lake Stream flows in a southerly direction from Slieve Rushen between Bawnboy and Ballyconnell towards Templeport Lough.

The Templeport Lake Stream Catchment includes the two waterbodies and is one of 190 areas prioritised for action on water quality by LAWPRO. Those behind the Programme will visit the catchment area over the next few months and will work with the public, State agency partners, and the agricultural and forestry sectors to address local water quality issues.

Usually meetings are held face-to-face with the local community about water quality in the catchment areas to explain the work. However, to comply with Covid-19 restrictions, this Templeport Lake Stream Catchment community information meeting will be held via Zoom, a free online service for video conferencing on the web.

Community Water Officer for Cavan, Ben Malone, is hopeful of a good attendance for the event despite the restriction on physical meetings: “It’s disappointing of course, but the opportunity is still there us all to meet in a virtual setting. We’re all in lockdown at the minute so I think people would enjoy and benefit from the opportunity to come together and converse about how we can improve water quality in the locality.

It’s a prime area for fishing and also one that is relied upon for drinking water so hopefully people will be interested in signing-in and getting involved,” Mr Malone said.

Those wishing to partake and have their say can register online in advance by typing https://bit.ly/3k6zeUn into their internet browser to access the registration page. Regestrations will be accepted anytime before Tuesday, November 3. Alternatively, visit the Programme’s website, www.watersandcommunities.ie, or Facebook at @LAWPROteam.
