Local Spanish lady lives her dream with National Concert Hall performance

A local flamenco singer enthused that her performance at the National Concert Hall last week was like a dream.

Rebecca Sanchez who came to Belturbet two and half years ago with her husband David, because they wanted to live in a tranquil and attractive part of the world have a little girl called Caroline.

Rebecca is a health care worker in the Oakview Nursing Home in Belturbet and loves her work there and is constantly entertaining the staff and residents with her astonishing flamenco singing.

A few months ago Rebecca was singing in the Spanish Institute in Dublin and a short time later they got a call from RTÉ inquiring if they knew any flamenco singers and dancers in Ireland, because their concert orchestra were performing Spanish works from a ballet called 'El amor brujo'.

The Institute wisely recommended Rebecca and this led to her performing with the orchestra in the National Concert Hall last Friday night, where she was the star of the show broadcast on Lyric FM and social media platforms. Rebecca brought star quality, glamour and her beautiful rich voice to the performance.

Chief Conductor of the Orchestra, Jaime Martin said you feel flamenco and its extraordinary rhythms and range of voice and when it is combined with the sound of the orchestra, it is a powerful combination.

Rebecca told the Celt it was a big surprise when she got the call from a producer in RTÉ.

“I really enjoyed doing the performance – it was like being seven or eight years of age again. I felt so happy – it was like a dream.”

Rebecca started singing flamenco at a tender age, having been given a love of the style by her mother.

“I went into the school of dance when I was three and half years old, and studied with a master from the age of four.”

Now she shares her love of flamenco with the Oakview residents.

“This is my second family in the Oakview Nursing Home and I can give a lot of love to the residents – I am very lucky and the people in Belturbet are very friendly,” said Rebecca.
