Cavan Icebreakers cancels its Christmas morning swim

The Cavan Icebreakers Christmas morning swim will be cancelled for the first time in its 53-year history, writes Gemma Good.

Cavan Icebreakers Committee has taken the difficult decision to cancel its 53rd annual event at Annagh Lake, Butlersbridge, due to the threat posed by COVID-19.

The decision has been taken to ensure the safety of all members who would be attending the swim, which over the years has raised thousands for local charities and causes.

Secretary of Cavan Icebreakers, Jacinta Dunleavy, points out that it would be impossible to take a group photograph and practice social distancing.

Jacinta, whose father Sean Walsh was one of the events founders, assured that all previous records will be frozen. Sean would have been due to complete his 53rd consecutive annual swim.

“If you completed 10 swims in a row, in 2021 you will be taking your 11th swim in a row,” she confirmed.

“Cavan Icebreakers Committee acknowledge that swimmers will be disappointed but hope that they can acknowledge that the decision was taken in the interest of public health and safety.

“It has been a very difficult year for everybody but hopefully 2021 will be a better year for everyone.”

The Committee wishes everyone a happy and safe Christmas with their families and look forward to brighter and safer days of 2021.
