White Christmas unlikely but santa's flight path clear

It's not looking like a white Christmas, according to the latest weather forecast from Met Éireann but the good news is - santa's flight path looks clear for Christmas Eve night.

The latest weather bullet says today will be mostly cloudy with patchy rain and drizzle. Becoming mostly dry through the afternoon and evening with some bright spells developing. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees in light variable breezes becoming northwesterly during the afternoon.

Mostly dry with some clear spells tonight and just a few passing showers. Frost and some icy patches will develop as overnight temperatures fall to between minus 2 and plus 2 degrees. Some mist and fog patches may also form as light and variable breezes fall calm at times.

Tuesday will start mostly dry with frost and fog lingering in parts. Sunny spells will develop where fog and low cloud clears with mostly dry conditions and just a risk of an isolated shower. It will be a cold day with highs of just 2 to 5 degrees, as light variable winds fall calm at times.

The outlook for the coming days is for rain at times in the south and east, however a good deal of dry weather elsewhere with frosts at night and relatively calm winds.

Tuesday night: After an early frost with lowest temperatures of minus 2 to plus 4 degrees, cloud will increase across the country with rain extending over south Munster and south Leinster. It will remain mostly dry elsewhere with mist and fog patches forming in light to moderate northerly winds, increasing fresh to strong at times on southern coasts.

On Wednesday, rain and sleet will slowly clear southeastwards in the morning. Brighter spells in the northwest will extend southeastwards, becoming mostly clear across the country by evening. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees in moderate to fresh and gusty northerly winds.

It will become mostly dry and clear on Wednesday night, with just isolated showers in the north and east. Lowest temperatures of minus2 to plus2 degrees with a risk of frost and icy patches in moderate northerly winds easing light northwesterly by morning.

The forecast for Thursday, Christmas Eve, is for mostly dry conditions with sunny spells. Cloud will increase along northern and western coasts by afternoon with the risk of isolated light showers. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees in mostly light northwesterly breeze.

Thursday (Christmas Eve) night: Dry with clear spells however cloud will increase from the northwest overnight. Lowest temperatures of minus 2 to plus 3 degrees coolest in the southeast with frost developing for a time in light west to southwest breezes.

All systems are go for Santa's flight plan.

Friday, Christmas Day, looks like being mostly cloudy and dry with just the risk of an isolated shower on the west coast. Highest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees in moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.

Further Outlook: Current indications suggest, after a spell of wet weather on Saturday, it will turn much colder for the early days of next week.
