Security alert sees Butlersbridge to Clones road closed

The A3/N54 route will remain closed until further notice between Butlersbridge in Cavan and Clones in Monaghan due to an incident at Wattlebridge in Fermanagh.

The Wattlebridge area has been the scene of an ongoing security alert since last Wednesday. The PSNI have been investigating Continuity IRA claims they have left a bomb in the area. The dissident republicans claim to have fired shots at a PSNI helicopter used to try to locate the device.

The PSNI heard no shots and their helicopter was undamaged.

The gardaí had closed the road at Leggykelly last Thursday, but reopened it. Today the closure is from Butlersbridge and it will be in place "until further notice".

It's also closed in Fermanagh. Previously the PSNI had left the road open.

"The Wattlebridge Road and Cavan Road, outside Newtownbutler, are closed due to an ongoing security alert," said a PSNI spokesperson. "Diversions are in place and motorists are asked to use an alternative route."
