Wintry showers today with snow in some areas

Weather Update

Cold with frost or ice lingering this morning on untreated surfaces. There will be scattered wintry showers today with occasional sunny spells, according to the latest weather forecast from Met Éireann. Showers will fall as sleet or snow in places, and some will be heavy with hail. Temperatures slowly rising to 2 to 4 degrees at best, with a light to moderate westerly breeze.

It's promised very cold tonight with a sharp frost and icy patches forming early in the night. Scattered showers of sleet or snow will continue throughout the night, most frequent in west Ulster. Lowest temperatures of -3 to 0 degrees with mainly light westerly breezes, fresh at times near coasts.

Tomorrow morning (Saturday) will see another cold start to the day with frost and ice slow to clear. There'll be scattered showers of rain, sleet and snow, becoming drier in the afternoon with good sunny spells developing. Highest temperatures of just 2 to 4 degrees with a light to moderate westerly breeze.

The national weather forecaster says it will stay cold for the remainder of this weekend and to start next week. Sleet and snow on Saturday night will clear eastwards, with a mix of showers and clear spells following for Sunday and Monday. Turning unsettled but milder for the rest of next week.

The forecast for Saturday night is cold with a band of sleet and snow in the west moving eastwards across the country, with accumulations in many areas. The rain, sleet and snow will gradually clear into the Irish Sea towards morning. Frost and ice will develop as it clears, with lowest temperatures of -3 to 0 degrees in a light breeze.

Another cold day on Sunday with sunny spells and scattered showers, mainly in the north and west where some will be of sleet or snow. Showers will drift further inland through the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 3 to 5 degrees in a moderate west to southwest breeze.

Cold again on Sunday night and dry in many areas with showers easing. Lowest temperatures of +3 to -1 degrees with frost forming.

Looking ahead to Monday and it's set to be a largely dry and bright day, with showers becoming more isolated and long sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees in a light to moderate westerly breeze.

Gradually becoming cloudy on Monday night with rain pushing into the west and southwest later in the night. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees with frost and icy patches forming in a moderate southerly breeze.

Turning unsettled on Tuesday with widespread rain, turning to sleet or snow for a time as it meets the colder air. A milder day over the southern half of the country with highest afternoon temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees, but remaining cold over the northern half of the country with highest afternoon temperatures of just 2 to 5 degrees.

Outbreaks of rain will continue on Tuesday night. However, it will be a milder night with lowest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees.

Current indications suggest weather will be milder but unsettled for the rest of next week, with outbreaks of rain and breezy conditions.
