Audit of road signage sought

The issue of maintaining signage to create a favourable impression for visitors to the county was raised at the January meeting of Cavan County Council.

Cllr Shane P O’Reilly tabled the motion calling for a full audit of signage and road markings as discussed by Ballyjamesduff MD members.

The independent representative said many signs are damaged, dirty or stolen. Cllr O’Reilly made reference to a trip to the US in which he saw several signs for Mullagh in one bar. He told the other members of a sign that was hit by a lorry and was never repaired: “We need to do better, it is an area we are really lacking in.”

Cllr Brendan Fay (Ind) backed the motion saying it represented “essential housekeeping” for the council.

Cllr Aidan Fitzpatrick agreed with his colleagues on the importance of addressing the issue. Cathaoirleach Sarah O’Reilly made the point that signage is important to ensure visitors have a good initial impression of the county.

“The local area offices are overstretched at the minute. The council will have to look at bringing in outside contractors to address the problems.”

“We need to ensure they are cleaned up. It’s a small thing, but it takes a lot of manpower to do,” concluded Cllr O’Reilly.
