Shock death of former councillor Paddy Sexton

There was a palpable air of shock, disbelief and sadness as news filtered out this afternoon (Thursday) that Patrick (Paddy) Sexton from St Patrick's Terrace, Swellan, in Cavan Town had passed away.

The affable former Cavan Town Councillor for Fianna Fáil was described by everyone who knew him as a "true gentleman by nature" who, in his role as a councillor, worked hard to help people with their various issues.

A member of a large and popular family from the Swellan area of Cavan Town, Paddy was also well regarded in his former position as porter at Cavan General Hospital.

A great conversationalist and very well versed on politics, Paddy loved to have a chat and had time for everyone he encountered. He enjoyed canvassing and appreciated the requirement for good political representation, at what ever level that might be.

Paddy took a great personal interest in the welfare and ongoing development of Cavan Town.

He loved to dress in a smart suit and carried out his role as chairman of Cavan Town Council with flair and professionalism, laced with his usual good humour.

Paddy was never afraid to raise the burning issue of the day in Cavan Town in his dynamic role as a Town Councillor and always had his research done in relation to the topic or issue he was speaking on.

Paddy is survived by hist mother Lily, brothers and sisters - Anna-Rose, Eddie, Margaret, Sr Lily, Terry, Luke, Michael, Catherine, Peter, Martina, Carmel and Stephen; in-laws, nephews, nieces, all his extended family and many, many friends.

Funeral details will be published later.
