€14.49M for Cavan Town Regeneration Project

The Cavan Regeneration Project is part of a €35.1 million package aimed at revitalising the North East, under Call 2 of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).

Major funding investment worth €14.49 million has been announced to focus on development and regeneration of the Abbeylands area of Cavan Town.

Public realm enhancement and the proposed delivery of a centralised ‘remote working centre’ are at the core of Cavan County Council led plan, which this morning has been successful in its application for support under the Government’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).

The overall aim of the much vaunted Abbeylands Regeneration Project is to make Cavan Town a more attractive place to live, work, visit and invest.

The funding was announced by the Department for Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

The Cavan Regeneration Project is part of a €35.1 million package aimed at revitalising the North East, under Call 2 of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).

All projects were chosen following a rigorous assessment process, overseen by a project advisory board consisting of Government Departments, State agencies and national and international experts in areas such as building, architecture and planning.

Welcoming the announcement, Cavan-Monaghan Fianna Fail TD Brendan Smith, siad the major State investment is “very welcome” and will “enhance considerably” the infrastructure in the centre of the county town.

“I compliment Cavan County Council on their initiative and detailed work in preparing this application and I am very glad to have strongly supported the Council application.”

He added: “In these difficult times it is very heartening to have such a major project given the go ahead with very substantial state funding. Investment in our town centres is long overdue and will be welcomed by local communities.”

Fine Gael TD and Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys said that regenerating town centres has been a “huge priority” of hers during her time in Government. “I believe a project like this will result in more investment and, in turn, the creation of more jobs for Cavan Town.

“But overall, it will make Cavan Town an even better place to work, live, raise a family and do business.”

Fine Gael Senator Joe O'Reilly commented: “This new investment will unlock the potential of our urban areas, making the best use of land available, promoting sensible development and compact growth, and ensuring that our urban communities are attractive and vibrant places in which to live, work and visit.”

Each local authority submitted at least one application for consideration.

Neighbouring Monaghan is to receive €13.11m for the Dublin Street Regeneration Initiative.

The new funding from round 2 of the URDF follows on from funding in November 2018 to Cavan County Council for improvements in Cavan Town Centre as well as initial funding to Monaghan County Council for the Dublin Street Regeneration Initiative.
