Wet and windy few days but turning good next week

Weather Update

A status yellow wind warning will come into place at noon for all of Ireland.

The warning, issued by Met Éireann, is valid until 7am tomorrow morning (Thursday),

The national weather forecasters says it will become "very windy" from afternoon through until Thursday morning. Southwest winds, veering westerly, will gust 90 to 110km/h generally, higher at times on hills and coasts in the south and west with a risk of some wave overtopping.

The latest weather forecast meanwhile says outbreaks of rain will extend from the southwest to all areas this morning, with some heavy falls. Frequent heavy showers will follow for the afternoon with occasional bright spells. Strong and gusty southwest winds will strengthen during the afternoon, reaching gale force in Donegal coastal areas by evening. Highs of 11 degrees.

Tonight, rain will clear to blustery showers. Southwest winds will be strong to near gale force, with some strong gusts near coasts. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 4 degrees. Winds will veer westerly and ease slightly overnight, but will still be fresh and gusty, especially on western and northern coasts.

Tomorrow (Thursday) will be cool and blustery with a mix of frequent heavy showers, and some sunny spells. The showers will bring a risk of hail and thunder, with sleet on high ground. Highs of only 6 or 7 degrees, in fresh to strong westerly winds with gales on western and northwestern coasts.

The outlook for the coming days is for cool and blustery conditions with heavy showers. Becoming milder, drier and more settled next week.

Thursday night will bring heavy showers with the continuing risk of hail and thunder. Some clear spells also. Lows of 2 or 3 degrees with fresh and gusty westerly winds.

The forecast on Friday is for a mix of sunny spells and heavy blustery showers, with the risk of hail and thunder. Cool, with highs of only 7 or 8 degrees, in moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.

Cold on Friday night with lows of 1 or 2 degrees bringing a patchy frost.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday is promised cool and blustery with scattered heavy showers, again with hail. Some of the showers will turn wintry over high ground. Highs of only 5 to 7 degrees and feeling colder in a brisk northwesterly breeze.

Cold again on Saturday night with lows of 1 to 3 degrees.

Sunday is expected to be a milder day with rain extending from the west to all areas. Highs of 8 to 11 degrees in a moderate westerly breeze.

Our weather becomes more settled into next week with lighter winds and a lot of dry weather. Monday and Tuesday will see a mix of scattered showers and sunny spells, with highs of 10 to 13 degrees. Wednesday (Saint Patrick's Day) will likely be mostly dry with sunny spells and highs of 12 to 14 degrees.
