Wintry showers with risk of hail and thunderstorms

Weather Update

Today will be cool and blustery with heavy showers becoming widespread through the morning but with sunny spells too, according to the latest weather bulletin from Met Éireann.

The showers will bring a risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms, and may turn wintry at times on high ground. Highest temperatures of 5 to 7 degrees, in fresh westerly winds, strong to gale force near coasts.

Frequent blustery showers will continue overnight, still with a risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms. Cold with lowest temperatures of 1 to 3 degrees in fresh and gusty southwesterly winds, strong to near gale force on coasts but easing somewhat later in the night.

Friday will be another day of heavy and blustery showers, with a continued risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms, and may turn wintry at times on high ground. There will be good sunny spells in the morning but becoming cloudier through the afternoon. Towards evening, squally showers will merge to longer spells of rain for a time. Highest temperatures of 5 to 7 degrees in fresh and gusty southwesterly winds, strong on coasts.

The outlook for the coming days is for cool and breezy weather initially with blustery showers but becoming more settled next week with drier and milder conditions.

On Friday night showers will continue with risks of hail and isolated thunderstorms. They will be most frequent in the western half of the country, becoming more scattered further east. Cold with lowest temperatures of 1 to 3 degrees with patchy frost developing. Moderate to fresh and gusty west to southwest winds will remain strong to near gale force near coasts.

Saturday will bring blustery showers initially across the country with good sunny spells developing. The showers will gradually become mostly confined to the west and north. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees in fresh and gusty westerly winds.

Showers will ease overnight on Saturday, continuing in the west and north with just isolated showers elsewhere. A chilly night with frost forming under long clear spells and lowest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees in moderating westerly winds.

Sunday is promised a mostly cloudy day with rain and drizzle moving in from the west during the morning, extending to all areas during the day, turning heavy at times in the northwest. Highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees in moderate to fresh west to southwest winds.

On Sunday night, rain will clear eastwards overnight, with scattered showers following in the northern half of the country and some patchy rain and drizzle lingering in places further south. Milder than recent nights with lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees, coldest in the north and warmest in the south, in moderate to fresh westerly winds.

The forecast for Monday is for a mild, dry and cloudy day for most with just patchy rain and drizzle, primarily affecting parts of Munster and Connacht. Highest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees in light to moderate northwesterly or variable breezes. Rain and drizzle will extend to most areas for a time overnight. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 9 degrees, coldest in the northeast.

Further outlook: Cloudy with patchy rain and drizzle at times on Tuesday but becoming largely dry afterwards. Turning milder with highest temperatures picking up to the low to mid-teens in mainly light.
