Over €323K for Killykeen Way

Cavan to benefit from over €739K from Outdoor Recreation Scheme

Over €323,000 has been allocated to improve the new ‘Killykeen Way’ - a 12km cycleway and walkway. It is one of a number of projects in County Cavan to benefit from over €739,000 in funding under the Outdoor Recreation Scheme in the past 12 months.

Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys has confirmed the successful projects and the allocations this morning.

Last month, Minister Humphreys announced €200,000 for the Dromore Greenway in Cootehill, as well as over €139,000 for the Cavan Way.

And last year, under this scheme, Minister Humphreys announced funding for the UNESCO Geopark (€20,000), the carpark and picnic area at Killykeen Forest Park (€20,000), Barnagrow Lake (€17,532) and the Cavan-Leitrim Railway Greenway (€20,000).

Speaking today, Minister Humphreys said: “I know how important our outdoor amenities have been for everyone during COVID-19.

“That’s why one of my main priorities as Minister for Rural and Community Development will continue to be investing in the great outdoors: our greenways, blueways, trails, cycle paths and forest walks."

In respect of the Killykeen Way, Minister Humphreys added: “I’m delighted that Cavan is to receive such significant funding for the greenway between Killykeen Forest Park and Killeshandra.

“This is a fabulous amenity and the enhancements to the cycleway and walkway will, I have no doubt, improve the experience of so many people.

“I believe it will also boost tourism to the county, which is more important than ever as we recover from COVID-19.”
