Audit of local roads sought

“It all comes back down to resources,” members elected to the Bailieborough-Cootehill Municipal District were told at their March meeting online when Fianna Fail's Aiden Fitzpatrick asked for the council to conduct an audit of roads in need of white lines throughout the county.

While the council already operate a system to monitor deterioration on local routes, senior engineer Alan Lyons accepted there was no such register to keep track of white lines.

He informed the meeting that, in 2020, €40,000 was spent by the local authority on road markings across 60 kilometres of local road way.

He clarified that wider roads of 5.5 metres in expanse required markings whereas narrower routes did not.

Cllr Fitzpatrick said there was a need for a record to be kept, in particular at junctions. He said he was aware of one area where an accident had occurred.

He further stated it would be important for members of the public to be informed when such works might be carried out.

“Roads are ever dangerous and I'm afraid of accidents,” Cllr Fitzpatrick implored.

Mr Lyons replied by asking the members tuning into the virtually held meeting to inform the council of problematic areas.
