Pauline Halton in Rose Cottage

Much loved Cavan artist passes away

The arts community of Cavan has been saddened by the passing of one of its most unique talents, visual artist Pauline Halton.

Pauline passed away on Wednesday, March 24 peacefully at her Lisduff home, outside Kilnaleck, in the loving care of her family.

Pauline established a style that was all her own. Whether her subject was her Uncle Mickey's hens, her own cat, flower displays, or her the Waterford stove, it was unmistakeably created with Pauline's purity of heart and vision.

The Anglo-Celt had the pleasure of interviewing Pauline on a few occasions, and her generous laugh was seldom far from her lips as she discussed her work.

“I have a strange perspective,” she told this paper in June 2019. “I don’t look ‘eye on’ things, I look up. Not looking down, not looking at, but looking up at things. It’s with wonder I look at things and I think that comes through in what I paint.”

Her home, Rose Cottage, featured frequently in her wonderful, heartfelt artworks.

“I draw only what I love, and only what I know... I lived next door and I lived here and they are the only doors I have lived behind,” she said.

Talking in 2015 she agreed her personality radiated from her work.

“I think it does, I paint when I’m happy - and I can really paint if I’m really happy, and if I’m not, I can’t paint.”

Each Christmas the Celt would receive a hard copy photograph of one her artworks and an accompanying poem to publish. It's sad to think this happy tradition will no longer occur, nor the occasional exhibitions of her work. No doubt the loss will be felt by countless people across Cavan, and beyond, whose lives she greatly enhanced.

In line with the current Government & HSE guidelines, Pauline's Funeral will be private. Removal on Friday morning to St. Mary's Church, Ballinarry arriving for Funeral Mass at 11.30am followed by Cremation. Family flowers only please, donations in lieu if desired to Palliative Care c/o Briody's Funeral Home or any family member.
