Cold and windy today with some sunny spells

Weather Update

A cold and windy day today with a mix of sunny spells and well scattered blustery showers. Showers will turn more frequent this afternoon, merging to longer spells of rain at times.

The latest weather bulletin from Met Éireann says that some showers will be heavy with hail, sleet and isolated thunderstorms.

By evening, some will fall as snow over high ground. Highest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees but quickly becoming colder through the afternoon, with an added wind chill factor in fresh to strong and gusty west to southwest winds.

Showers will continue for a time tonight, some heavy with hail, sleet and snow and the ongoing risk of isolated thunderstorms. However, showers will gradually ease overnight, with most areas becoming dry and clear by morning. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +1 degrees, bringing a risk of frost in sheltered areas. Moderate to fresh southwest to west winds, occasionally strong in coastal regions, will gradually ease light to moderate overnight.

A dry and bright start tomorrow (Saturday), with sunny spells. However, cloud will spread from the west through the morning, bringing outbreaks of rain and drizzle through the afternoon and evening. Rain will turn heavy at times in the northwest later. Highest temperatures of 8 or 9 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds, increasing fresh to strong by afternoon, reaching near gale force at times on northwest coasts.

Rather wet and breezy conditions for the rest of the weekend and to start next week, with continued outbreaks of rain particularly affecting the west and northwest.

Wet and very windy on Saturday night. Outbreaks of rain and drizzle will continue overnight, heaviest and most persistent in the west and northwest. Fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds, reaching near gale force in the west, will gradually ease moderate to fresh overnight. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees.

Sunday will be another wet and breezy day. Rain and drizzle will ease for a time in the morning but further outbreaks of rain will spread from the west through the afternoon and evening, later turning heavy over western counties. A mild day with highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees in moderate to fresh and gusty southwest winds, strong along west and southwest coasts.

Sunday night will be cloudy with continued outbreaks of rain, most persistent in the west and northwest. Remaining breezy too with moderate to fresh and gusty southwest winds. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees.

A cloudy and mild day on Monday with outbreaks of rain and drizzle most persistent over northern and western areas, with dry spells elsewhere. Highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds.

Monday night will be cloudy with patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle, again most persistent in the west and northwest. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees in moderate southwest winds.

Rain will continue to affect the west and north on Tuesday while elsewhere will become mainly dry. Another very mild day with highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees in moderate southwest winds, veering northwest and easing later.

Current indications suggest that it will turn drier, but much cooler from mid-week next week.
