Deputy Brendan Smith said the money would make a real difference to rural Ireland.

Almost €5m in Leader funding for Cavan and Monaghan

A local TD has welcomed the government funding for the Leader Programme which will see an investment injection of nearly €5million for rural enterprises in the constituency.

Funding of €2.5 million has been allocated to Cavan and €2.24 million for Monaghan. In total €65m was distributed to counties nationally, with Donegal receiving the most at €3.8m.

Leader, part funded by the EU, supports locally-led projects focussing on the likes of job creation, the digital transformation, supporting remote working and the green economy, as well as developing outdoor amenities.

“Leader funding also represents an opportunity for rural businesses and communities that are in need of investment. There is a need for this programme to continue and continue to make a real difference for rural Ireland,” stated Deputy Brendan Smith.

Announcing details of the new programme today, Minister Humphreys said: “Last week, I launched Our Rural Future, the Government’s ambitious new policy for the development of rural Ireland.

“As I said at the launch, Government alone does not have all the answers and there can be no one-size-fits all approach.

“Every town, village and parish is different and that means the people best placed to effect change in their communities are the people who live there.

“Leader has always been about a ground-up, community-led approach and that’s why I am delighted to announce details of this funding today."

This new programme is now open for applications and communities and local enterprises who wish to apply for funding should make contact with their Local Development Company to discuss how the Leader Programme can assist their plans.
