Stranded kayakers rescued from Lough Ramor

Two men were treated by paramedics after being rescued from Lough Ramor on Sunday afternoon.

Three men were out kayaking when two got into difficulty at approximately 2pm on Sunday on a stretch of water adjacent to the Lakeside Manor Hotel.

While all three were wearing life jackets, two had become separated from their kayak in choppy water about 100metres from shore and were floating in the water while clinging on to a second kayak for over half an hour.

After the alarm was raised, two local boats went out and assisted two men out of the water while the third was thankfully able to paddle in to the shore in his kayak.

It is believed the men were treated for cold and shock but no serious injuries were sustained. “It was quite frightening,” said one onlooker, who did not wish to be named.

“We could hear the men shouting for help and blowing a whistle, they were clearly quite distressed. Thankfully the emergency services were on the scene very quickly.

“While the morning started out fine, the wind had picked up very quickly and they obviously got into difficulty suddenly.” An ambulance, two fire engines and a Garda car attended the scene.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana confirmed to The Anglo-Celt that officers attended the scene at Lough Ramor on Sunday afternoon, April, 4.

“At approximately 1.30pm two men (late 20s) got into difficulty kayaking. Both males were brought to shore and taken to Cavan General Hospital for checkup.”
