Gardai receive numerous reports of scam calls

Many of these calls are coming from (083) numbers.

Gardai in Carrickmacross have received numerous calls from the public who have themselves been receiving calls from fraudsters purporting to be from the Department of Social Protection or other official Departments.

These callers have gone so far as to tell the call recipients that there is an arrest warrant has been issued for them.

“They will then ask for your PPS number and other personal details. Often the call is automated and you are then requested to press a digit to speak to someone in person. This initial contact is as always to create a sense of panic,” explained a spokesperson for the force.

Many of these calls are coming from (083) numbers.

“Please do not engage with these calls and hang up immediately,” added the spokesperson. “Never provide personal or financial details over the phone. If you have fallen victim to this scam, please alert your financial institution immediately and also report the matter to Gardaí. Please be fraud aware.”
