Council to seek funding for Shercock footpath problem

Cavan County Council hope to tap the Active Travel Scheme for funding to solve a problem regarding an area of Shercock village in need of additional lighting and foothpaths where a multitude of serious accidents have occurred in recent months.

Citing a crash involving a lorry which turned over, Aontú’s Sarah O’Reilly asked if the council had any update following a motion she tabled on the subject back in March.

“It's the second time it has happened in a year,” said Cllr O’Reilly said of the truck crash. “A scheme needs to be developed.”

Senior Area Engineer Alan Lyons said the most likely source of funding would be the Active Travel Scheme, which aims to make walking and cycling attractive, safe and accessible to everyone.

He said that the site specified by Cllr O’Reilly fits within the scheme’s remit as it is located in a 50kmph zone, subject to agreement with local landowner.

Fianna Fáil’s Aiden Fitzpatrick said he had already spoke with locals living in the area who were supportive of safety introducing measures in the immediate area.
