€232k funding for local sporting projects

An investment package of €232,870 in Dormant Accounts Funding has been announced for a wide range of sport and physical activity measures across Cavan and Monaghan.

The investment, announced by Sports Ireland, aims to engage communities across the country, focusing on people with disabilities, people who are educationally disadvantaged and from disadvantaged communities.

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Niamh Smyth confirmed the funding this afternoon. "The funding announced today will have a really positive impact on local sporting groups as well as our wider communities across Cavan and Monaghan.

"I was particularly delighted to see €63,680 allocated to Mullagh Community Hub, while the Belturbet Activity Hub received €21,955 under round four, with Kilnaleck also getting €21,955 under round five.

"Funding of €2,700 was secured by Cavan LSP for a TY intergenerational physical activity project with Active Age Ireland and secondary schools, as well as a €11,030 outdoor volunteer training and education programme. Again Cavan LSP received €14,190 funding for balance bikes in ASD unit in St Kilian’s NS Mullagh and communication boards for eight playgrounds in Cavan for children who are non-verbal / have learning difficulties."

In Monaghan Kilmore/Drumsnat Community Sports Hub will receive a welcome boost of €63,680 with Ballybay Community Sports Hub being awarded with a sum of €33,680.

"Addressing inequalities in sports participation is a key priority for my colleagues and I in Fianna Fáil.

"This significant investment targeting people who are economically, socially or educationally disadvantaged or who have a disability is very welcome.

"Over the course of this pandemic, we have seen the huge importance that Irish people place on sport and physical activity and the many benefits it can have on our mental and physical wellbeing.

"While restrictions have been difficult for all groups in society it has been particularly detrimental for people with a disability and for older adults. I am encouraged to see a strong level of investment in projects addressing this as returning to sport and physical activity safely will have far reaching benefits for both cohorts,’" concluded Deputy Smyth.
