Fixture clash overshadows semi-finals

The Cavan ladies footballers and camógs have had their plans for two crunch matches on Saturday thrown into turmoil due to a fixture clash between their respective league semi-finals.

The footballers are due to meet Meath in the Division 2 semi-final at 1pm in Kingspan Breffni, a fixture which was changed from the LGFA’s original master fixture plan which had those games pencilled in for Sunday.

Meanwhile, the camogie team are scheduled to take on Mayo at 3pm on Saturday in Markievicz Park, Sligo. There are seven dual players and at the time of going to print, neither of the national governing bodies have agreed to Cavan camogie’s request for a change.

“I feel that this is a player welfare issue, we are asking players to choose between two national semi-finals and that’s not right,” stated Cavan camogie chairperson Michelle Smith this afternoon.

The chairperson stated that she is hopeful something can be done. The Sligo venue is not available any later than 3pm on Saturday. It is understood that the camogie association and the national LGFA have discussed the matter but no resolution had been found at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, the Cavan men’s team face Wicklow at 2pm on Saturday in Páirc Tailteann in their Division 3 relegation play-off.
