Success for talented Cavan natives at prestigious awards

The Law Society presented their top award to Cavan town's Ciarán Cassidy and his Second Captains colleague Mark Horgan for their production for BBC Sounds, ‘Where is George Gibney?

Cavan have had great news on the awards front over the last week, as both Philip Doherty and a project worked on by documentarian Ciarán Cassidy received prestigious prizes.

Film director Philip Doherty won the top award at the Kimolos International Film Festival yesterday (Tuesday) for his Cavan-set debut film 'Redemption of a Rogue'.

Billed as "A bible, black comedy about a prodigal son returning to his hometown to seek salvation for his sins", it stars Aaron Monaghan.

The Kimolos International Film Festival is only the latest in a growing list of accolades for the film, which has also scooped prizes at the Galway Film Fleadh, (Winner Best Film and Best Debut Feature), Glasgow International Film Festival and Minneapolis – St. Paul International Film Festival.

Meanwhile, the Law Society presented their top award to Cavan town's Ciarán Cassidy and his Second Captains colleague Mark Horgan for their production for BBC Sounds, ‘Where is George Gibney?’

It was selected from 200 entries – received from over 130 journalists – to win the overall award in the 2021 Justice Media Awards.

The judges described the podcast, which looked at the child-abuse allegations surrounding one of Ireland’s most famous swimming coaches, as “a remarkable piece of journalism and an extraordinary listen”.

The podcast also won the top prize in the ‘Broadcast Journalism (Radio/Podcast – National)’ category.

Earlier this year ‘Where Is George Gibney?’ was an honouree for Documentary Pod, Crime & Justice Pod and won Best Original Music Score/Best Sound Design in the prestigious The Webby Awards 2021.
