Cavan bow out at first hurdle in Omagh

Ulster SFC

Tyrone 1-18

Cavan 0-13

Paul Fitzpatrick at Healy Park

Cavan surrendered their Ulster title in disappointing fashion at Healy Park this afternoon.

After being relegated to Division 4 for the first time in the county’s history, Cavan came into this match as huge underdogs but their performance for the first half-hour belied that status as they matched the Red Hands in all departments.

However, Tyrone, for whom Darren McCurry kicked a brilliant 0-10, began to stretch ahead just before half-time, kicking five points in succession to lead by 0-11 to 0-7 at half-time.

Cavan’s first-half scorers were Oisin Pierson, Thomas Galligan, Gerard Smith and Gearoid McKiernan (0-4, 2f).

Cavan were all at sea in the first five minutes of the second half as the hosts struck for 1-1, McCurry with his eighth point and sub Brian Kennedy walking in a goal after a well-worked move. From there, Tyrone could do as they liked; Cavan briefly threatened a comeback, with sub Conor Smith doing well, but the home team were always in control.
