Maguire tied for 14th after first round of Major

Leona Maguire has turned in a solid start in her first round at the Amundi Evian Championship in France as she aims to become Ireland’s first female golf Major champion.

A two-under par 69 leaves the Ballyconnell star four off the early lead. Her bogey-free card was built on sublime ball-striking. From tee to green, Maguire was exemplary, hitting 72% of fairways and finding 77% of greens in regulation.

However, her putting wasn’t up to her usual high standard which meant she failed to capitalise on birdie opportunities, taking 29 putts in total.

Leona currently lies in a tie for 14th, with Pajaree Anannarukarn and Yealimi Noh tied for the lead in the prestigious event, which boasts a $4.5m prize fund.
