Unsettled weather with thundery showers and a risk of spot flooding

Weather Update

Unsettled over the rest of the week, the weekend, and into early next week with widespread heavy or thundery showers and a continued risk of spot flooding.

Outbreaks of showery rain and blustery conditions will persist this morning (Thursday), heaviest across the midlands, north and east. Whilst it will gradually brighten up from the west, widespread heavy thundery showers will develop too, with the risk of hail and spot flooding, according to Met Éireann.

Highest temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees, or a little cooler in northern Ulster. Fresh to strong southerly winds, veering westerly and moderating for a time, but winds will increase strong and gusty again along southern and western coasts in the evening.

Expect scattered showers with longer spells of rain overnight on Thursday, heaviest and most frequent over the northern half of the country. Some clear spells will occur further south. Lowest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees in moderate to fresh west to northwest winds, strong at times on western and southwestern coasts.

Friday is promised another showery day, some of which will be heavy with thunderstorms and with the continued risk of spot flooding. Showers will merge to longer spells of rain at times in Ulster. The best of the sunny spells will be in the south and southeast. Highest temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees, in moderate to fresh westerly winds.

A mostly cloudy night on Friday with just occasional clear spells. Showers will continue overnight with longer spells of rain at times. Lowest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees in moderate, occasionally fresh, west to southwest winds.

Saturday is set to be a breezy day with widespread showers once again with isolated thunderstorms bringing the risk of spot flooding. Cloudy to start with but sunny spells will develop. Highest temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees generally, but cooler along Atlantic coasts in moderate to fresh and gusty westerly winds, strong on exposed coasts. Showers will become mostly confined to Ulster and Atlantic coastal counties overnight with lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in moderating westerly winds.

Showery conditions will continue Sunday with thunderstorms possible. Showers will be heaviest and most frequent over the northern half of the country. Further south, drier and sunnier intervals will occur. Highest temperatures 15 to 19 degrees in moderate to fresh west to southwest winds, easing later.

Monday will bring a mix of sunny spells and showers. Showers will continue quite heavy over Ulster but elsewhere they will generally not be as heavy as previous days. Highest temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees in light to moderate west to northwest winds.

Further Outlook: Current indications suggest that it will continue unsettled with well scattered showers developing for Tuesday before more persistent rain arrives for Wednesday. Daytime highs generally ranging between 17 and 20 degrees.
