For crying out Cloud!

The incredible sight was captured near Ballyjamesduff earlier this week.

Atmospheric stirrings gave the people of Ballyjamesduff quite a shock earlier this week when they looked up to find a large mushroom-shaped cloud formation looming on the outskirts of their town.

But the incredible sight, as captured by images and video taken by locals and shared with The Anglo-Celt, is nothing more than what is known scientifically as a Cumulonimbus cloud formation.

The scene was captured on Monday afternoon last, August 9.

Though menacing looking, Cumulonimbus form at multi-level when thunderstorm clouds grow vertically.

They appear low to the ground and can extend as high as 50,000 feet in into the sky in towers or plumes, as seen near Ballyjamesduff.

Though at this height, high winds will flatten the top of the cloud out. The unusual cloud formation seen in Ballyjamesduff lasted for around 10 minutes before disappearing.

With the weather across continuing to go from bad to worse this week, the changeable conditions developed to where Met Éireann issued yet another 'Yellow' status thunder warning for 16 counties, including Cavan, with a risk of floods and hazardous conditions also threatening.

The weather for much of the week is set to be “mixed and changeable” according to national forecasters, with showers or rain and some bright spells.
