Cavan Toastmasters to host online open night

Cavan Toastmasters will hold an open meeting on Zoom this week for anyone interested in improving their public speaking skills.

The meetings promise to be fun and interesting, and participants are not under any pressure. One of the many who have benefited from joining Toastmasters is David Cahill.

David was diagnosed at Primary School with Dyspraxia and Dyslexia and was very low in self-confidence.

“After seeing a member of Toastmasters on TV, I began to wonder if this was what I was looking for. I thought about it for some time and after attending the club as a guest, l decided to join. Since then I have received many awards and won a number of speech contests. I am now president of the club and very proud of that.”

David says self-confidence is the main benefits he’s received since joining Toastmasters in 2016.

“I find that I thrive in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. Nobody puts pressure on you. You progress at your own rate. My speaking skills have improved. I used to speak very fast and rush through speeches. My Evaluators and mentor helped me to develop strategies to slow down. Finally, my delivery of information is much smoother.

“I am now a member of many community organisations and I am asked to speak more frequently. Thank you Toastmasters. I couldn’t have done it without you.”

Another member Dr. ldara Udo only joined Cavan Toastmasters in 2020.

“I was very interested in the experience of public speaking in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. What has helped me most is the supportive environment and encouragement of fellow Toastmasters, which means there is no pressure and I can achieve my goals at my own pace.

“I was born and raised in Nigeria where people are known to be very expressive and this could easily be mistaken for being loud and arrogant and aggressive.

“ln my work as a doctor, finding balance between personality and professionalism is key to success. Diverse skills such as listening, critical thinking, giving feedback, time management, mentoring, team-building, planning, organisation and delegation are all valuable to me in advancing my career.

“As a member of Toastmasters, I am developing my confidence, interpersonal, communication and leadership skills in an entertaining and educational way. This cannot be compared to any other programme or course on the market.”

Cavan Toastmasters will hold an open meeting on Zoom on Wednesday, August 25 from 8pm. If you want to attend contact toastmasterscavan@gmail.com and organisers will send a link. lf you want to improve your speaking skills in a fun and interesting way, Toastmasters is the place to be.
