Commissioner updated on Quinn file

Earlier this month detectives from Carrickmacross conducted a joint operation in South Armagh

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris was updated on the ongoing investigation into the murder of a young man 14 years ago in the Castleblayney area. The top cop visited this region last week when he was briefed on a number of investigations and operational issues.

In a joint operation, officers attached to An Garda Síochána and the PSNI recently visited a number of addresses north of the border as part of fresh wave of enquiries into the murder of Paul Quinn near Castleblayney in 2007.

Comm Harris visited Cavan/Monaghan Division on Monday last, August 30, when he called at Monaghan and Castleblayney Garda Stations.

At Castleblayney Garda Station, he met with Chief Superintendent for the region, Aidan Glacken, Inspector Kenneth Coughlan, and Detective Sergeant Kieran Regan who updated the chief in relation to the Quinn murder.

Earlier this month detectives from Carrickmacross conducted a joint operation in South Armagh, with the assistance of local PSNI officers and Detectives attached to the PSNI major investigation team. The door-to-door visits occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 17 and 18. The enquiries were made approaching the 14th anniversary of Mr Quinn’s death, which occurred on October 20, 2007.

The young Cullyhanna man was aged just 21 years when he was lured to a secluded barn at Tullyvanus, Castleblayney, and attacked by a group of up to 10 men armed with iron bars and cudgels. They mercilessly broke nearly every bone in his body below his neck. He later died in hospital as a result of the extent of his injuries.

An extensive Garda investigation remains “ongoing”. A number of arrests have been made to date, and statements taken from people suspected of having knowledge of the killing but nobody has been charged in relation to it.
