Council announce emergency road closure

Traffic lights are in operation on the R194 Virginia to Mullagh Road to facilitate road drainage works.

The council have announced an emergency road closure which will take place later this month to faciliate the installation of a box culvert at a local bridge.

The R-165 in the townland of Cornakill will be shut to traffic from 8am on Saturday, September 18 to 8am on Monday, September 20.

There will be no through road access from Bailieborough to Kingscourt and vice-versa for the duration of the works at Cornakill Bridge.

Motorists have been offer an alternative route, with traffic travelling towards Kingscourt from Bailieborough directed via R-178 & R-162 Shercock. Traffic travelling towards Bailieborough from Kingscourt will also be diverted via R-162 & R-178 Shercock.

Local traffic in the area will be accommodated as far as possible, but there will no through road at the townland of Cornakill, say the local authority.

All temporary emergency and proposed road closures are subject to Section 75 of Roads Act 1993 and Article 12 of Roads Regulation 1994.

Separately, traffic lights will be in operation on the R194 Virginia to Mullagh Road to facilitate road drainage works.

The traffic light system is expected to remain in place for up to three weeks, following the announcement made earlier this week.

“Some delays can be expected,” said a Cavan County Council spokesperson.
