Cavan rents rise by 6.5%

Average rents in Cavan have increased by 6.5% over the past year.

The latest Residential Tenancies Board report shows every county has seen rents rise over the past 12 months.

Cavan’s average now stands at €761.64, up from €715.11 in the same period last year.

The report is based on the actual rents paid in 13,884 private tenancies registered with the RTB across the country for the period from April to June of this year. Rents in Cavan rose by 3.1% between the first and second quarters of 2021.

A breakdown by Municipal District shows the Cavan-Belturbet area has seen rents rise by more than seven per cent over the past two quarters, or six months. The average rent there stands at €730.29.

Data for the Bailieborough-Cootehill and Ballyjamesduff MDs was not made available due to the low number of tenancy agreements in those areas.

Over the past decade the average rent paid in Cavan has risen by €321 per month.

Meanwhile, rental costs in Leitrim had the largest increase over quarter two, having jumped by 17.3% since March, bringing the average cost there to €704pm.

Longford saw a rise of just over 15.9% over the past year with the average there now at €755.66pm.

Housing charity Threshold says it’s concerned with the dramatic rises seen in some parts of the country.

It’s advised that any private renters who have received a rent review notice from their landlord should contact the charity to discuss it as almost half of people who did over quarter two found their notice was actually invalid.
