Dogs are going barking mad for Enfield cafe’s pupachinos

A DOG mad mum says opening a canine friendly coffee shop in Enfield has been a lifelong ambition.

Self-confessed dogaholic Clodagh Brady opened up Blackdog Coffee earlier this year in tribute to her beloved rescue pooch, a Lab Collie named Suzie.

The passionate pet owner who has three dogs, eight hens and a cockerel has welcomed every breed of dog imaginable from Labs and Great Danes to Cockapoodles and Jack Russells through her doors since opening all eager to get their paws on her famous “pupachino.”

Clodagh who lives in Clonard with husband Vincent, daughter Aoibhinn (10) and son Donagh (8) says merging her love of coffee and dogs has been “a dream come true.” She added: “I’m a dogaholic I love my dogs, I have three of my own, Westie Lulu who just turned fifteen last month, he was my first fur baby, Lab Collie Suzie who we rescued about six years ago who is without doubt one of the most amazing dogs, she melts your heart with her eyes.

“And we have a Jack Russell, puppy called Lola. My dogs are everything to me.

“For a lot of people, a dog is a member of the family. Your child can go into restaurants; why shouldn’t your dog be allowed in?

“I think at this stage I know the dog’s name quicker than the owners!

“They come and get their pupachino or they get a little treat, and they are put up on the Blackdog Hall of Fame.

“It’s where I keep my sugar sachets and coffee cup lids, so I love the fact that people stand there, stir their coffee and stare at dogs and forget about things for a few seconds and go into a land of dogs.

“I don’t charge for pupachinos, I use a little bit of cream and water and put a little treat on the top and the dogs lap it up, the dogs love their pupachinos!

Lockdown made Clodagh originally from Longford realise that she wanted to pursue her dreams as she explains:

“I had been at home with my kids for the last ten years and in the second lockdown I sort of knew that I needed something more for myself.

“I was always looking out for something to do, my background is hotel management but I started nannying for about fourteen years when we lived in Dublin and I loved it but I didn’t want to pay someone to look after my kids while I looked after somebody else’s.

“I love coffee and I love talking to people and an opportunity arose, and we bit the bullet and put a proposal into the landlord.

“My husband is an engineer and we spent over three months renovating the building and then Blackdog Coffee was created.

“When you are out for a walk you want to go in somewhere quickly.

“I would never tie my dogs up outside so even the fact that people can walk into the shop and bring their dogs with them grab a coffee and sit out the back if they want to and have the best of both worlds with their dog beside them.”
