Twenty-one gardaí assaulted

A total of 21 gardaí have suffered an assault in the Cavan-Monaghan District to date in 2021. It is one of the highest numbers for a rural garda district.

The figures were released to the Department for Justice following a search of the Pulse database conducted on October 4 last. The number of local officers attacked during the course of their duty in Cavan-Monaghan has remained steady over the past seven years. The lowest number of attacks of gardaí over that period was 20, recorded in 2016, and it peaked at 38 incidents the following year.

Thirty gardaí were assaulted in Cavan-Monaghan in 2020, down from 34 in 2019. “I am deeply conscious of the risks encountered by all members of An Garda Síochána every time they go on duty,” said Minister for Justice, Heather Humphreys. “All assaults, of whatever nature, are a blatant disregard for the safety of the brave people in uniform who risk their lives every day in the service of the State.”
