Mighty Avons star Peter Smith passes away

Peter Smith, one of the three Smith brothers instrumental in the success of the Mighty Avons in the late 50s passed away last week.

The three Smith brothers from Keelagh, Ballyhaise, were central to the formation of the Mighty Avons. Paddy, Peter and Jimmy were highly accomplished musicians and stamped their style on the Mighty Avons sound. In conjunction with the late Larry Cunningham, they achieved international fame.

Jimmy the founder, leader and manager of the Mighty Avons, passed away last August. Paddy and Peter honed their musicianship as members of a local brass band. This grounding in performance led to the formation of The Mighty Avons.

The Smith brothers and Larry Cunningham’s showmanship was augmented by the musicianship of Mickey Brady, Brian Finlay, Gerry Walsh and Ronnie Griffiths.

The Avons conqured the musical world, - being one of the first Irish bands to find success on the British Charts with the song ‘A tribute to Jim Reeves’ (also number one in Ireland).

Peter Smith, of Carrickmore, Ballyhaise, Cavan, passed away in the wonderful care of the staff of Oakview Nursing Home, Belturbet, Cavan, surrounded by his loving family. He is sadly missed by his wife Marie, daughters Deirdre O’Sullivan, Janet Tierney, Fiona Slater and his son Paul, adored grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law nephew, nieces, relations, neighbours and large circle of friends.
